Gwaebul refers to a large Buddhist painting, which was used in a Buddhist mass or ritual as an object of worshipping. Especially Yeongsanhoesangdo depicting Buddha preaching a sermon was often painted as Gwaebul. This Gwaebul depicts the scene that Buddha preaches a sermon. This 6.13m long and 4.26m wide Gwaebul was painted on the ramie cloth. Buddha is pointing his fingers into the earth making his hand's shape Hangmachokjiin that has the meaning of defeating the evils. He is sitting at the center of the picture throwing on the robes over only one shoulder. He has a tetragonal face and very dignified and serious features. He looks stern. His splendid physique gives an impression of gravity. 8 Buddhist angels on the lower part and 10 disciples on the middle part surround Buddha tightly making the overall composition of the painting symmetrical. The red color is mainly used and other neutral tone colors, such as green and yellow colors, make the painting look bright. It was painted in 1649 or the 27th year of King Injo in the Joseon Dynasty by Sin Gyeom, Deok Hui and Gyeong Yun, artists from Gyeonggi and Chungcheongnam-do. Clearly depicted Buddha's face and his splendid physique overwhelm the whole canvas. Bright colors, magnificent patterns and the very accurate and elaborate depiction on the angels and disciples surrounding Buddha make it one of the best Buddhist paintings of that time.
